How to Wear 2017’s Sheer Trend Like a Grown-Up

Just as we were starting to take the opacity of our clothes for granted, here comes one of spring’s biggest trends: sheer tops and dresses. But having done the whole see-through thing before (we’re not exactly looking to relive Bonnaroo 2010 here), we wanted to know how to rock the trend in a way that’s more appropriate for 7 p.m. cocktails—or even the office.

High-Neck Dress

Since you’ll already be showing skin through your clothes, you don’t want to go overboard with a plunging neckline. Instead, long sleeves and a Victorian-inspired collar keep the look elegant.

Button-Down + Bralette + Midi Skirt

With anything sheer, a bralette is your best friend. Yes, you’re technically showing off your lingerie, but a modest midi and classic button-down ensure it feels tasteful and not tacky. (And you can wear a longline shape or a cami for even more coverage.)

Sheer Midi Dress + Mini Slip

If you’re Beyoncé, you can pull off a tulle dress with just a bodysuit underneath. If you’re a mere mortal like the rest of us, a slipdress (or any plain mini you have hanging in your closet) lets you get the same high-fashion effect without feeling overexposed.

Lace Top + Blazer

In general, we recommend keeping fits on the looser side when going sheer—it’s already revealing in one way—but the exception is a sleek blouse when layered under a tailored blazer. It works because the overall look still reads as polished (and when buttoned up, is even office-appropriate).

Embroidered Top + High-Waisted Jeans

Still feel a little too bare with a fully sheer top? Allover floral embroidery works as a buffer, with the added bonus of being totally on-trend. And high-rise denim tucks everything in nicely.
